What’s in the news?
World Trade Congress on Gender (WTO, Dec. 5-7, 2022)
> From 5 to 7 of December, the first edition of the “World trade congress on gender” will be held in Geneva. This year’s topic is “Gender equality for sustainable trade and development”.
It will be the first international research conference on trade and gender. The goal is to release research work conducted by trade and gender experts.

Gender equality is key to harnessing Africa’s free trade benefits (ISS, Dec. 1, 2022)
> Africa could benefit greatly from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), but for all Africans to enjoy the fruits of freer trade, greater gender equality is needed. Liberalizing trade could unlock better futures for all Africans, especially women.
Whither “Invigorated” WTO Work on Trade and Gender? (IISD - SDG Knowledge Hub, Nov. 28, 2022)
> After a Declaration on trade and gender was put on hold in June, the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Informal Working Group (IWG) on trade and gender resumed work after the Organization’s summer break. The focus appears to be increasingly on how women entrepreneurs can trade internationally, diverting attention from other ways that trade can affect women.
