Adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the two kinds of esophageal cancer. The flat cells that line the esophagus are the source of SCC. Although it can appear nearly anywhere along the esophagus, the cancer is most commonly discovered in the upper and middle segments of the esophagus.
