In 2045, environmental breakdown might result in global humanitarian disaster. Globally, this would mean that environmental breakdown would be the centre for all the concerns- a collapse of food security, an increase in climate refugees, intra-state conflict due to resource protection.  For the UK this would create an extraordinary opportunity to provide leadership in a different direction because the current international system does not show the political will to handle these global issues. This would mean a real opportunity for a middle ranking power and the UK might want to respond by providing an effective leadership role, centring on international cooperation and sustainable positive action against climate change.
